Apples, Apples, Apples!

In honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday (September 26th), we spent time this week learning about the life cycle of an apple tree. This coincided nicely with our learning about the life cycle of a butterfly as well. Science is so cool!
We decided to celebrate our learning by making homemade applesauce today! Each student contributed an apple to the recipe. We cooked it up and got to enjoy our delicious treat at the end of the day. YUM!

Today was Dot Day in Technology!

Students created a 2D design of their dot and then Mrs. Pomraning made them 3D in the pictures using an Ipad app. Go to quiver.com to print coloring pages, then the app will animate the page.
So cool!

Our First STEAM Activity!

Our class has a pet octopus. Yes, a pet octopus!
We haven't decided on a name for him yet, but we will!

The class figured out how we could make his legs using strips of paper.
They worked in small groups to figure out a plan and had to use teamwork.

I think he turned out pretty great - what do you think?!

We Did It!

The first week of first grade is under our belts! We had a successful week of building our classroom community and learning much more about one another. All of these students are so special and talented; I cannot wait for this great adventure with every one of them!
Off we go!

A Visit from a 3M Science Wizard!

On Tuesday we had a visit from, Joe, a 3M Science Wizard. He taught us about the states of matter and cryogenics. We were able to complete many experiments with the liquid nitrogen he brought! He turned a banana into a hammer, smashed a racquetball into pieces, and crushed a balloon with the air still in it! To cap it all off, he made us crunchy marshmallows! What a treat!

It's May Day!

Happy May Day, Everyone!
We celebrated spring by learning more about our frogs and then completing a directed drawing project. We painted them like the different kinds of frogs from the book.
What a fun morning!
