This year we are partnering with a fifth grade class to be Reading Buddies. Once a month we get together and read to each other. We also have completed some poetry and written about what we are thankful for. It is so fun to watch their relationships grow.
Everybody knows that a symbol of fall is pumpkins! This week we used pumpkins to answer two different STEAM related questions. First, we used our newfound knowledge of adjectives to answer the question, "What adjectives describe a pumpkin?" Of course, we had to open them up to find out! Next, we separated all the seeds from the pulp inside and answered the question, "How many seeds are in a pumpkin?" It was tricky, but we used our counting strategy of making groups of ten to find out. Our pumpkins had 303, 456, and a whopping 606 seeds in them! We learned that the darker the pumpkin and the more lines it has on the outside, the more seeds there are inside. Who knew?!
Yesterday we had our first field trip! We traveled to Irondale to listen to the orchestra's Disney concert. They were fantastic and we had a great time!
In honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday (September 26th), we spent time this week learning about the life cycle of an apple tree. This coincided nicely with our learning about the life cycle of a butterfly as well. Science is so cool!
We decided to celebrate our learning by making homemade applesauce today! Each student contributed an apple to the recipe. We cooked it up and got to enjoy our delicious treat at the end of the day. YUM!
Students created a 2D design of their dot and then Mrs. Pomraning made them 3D in the pictures using an Ipad app. Go to quiver.com to print coloring pages, then the app will animate the page. So cool!
